The relevance of Astronomy
The stars, so distant and mysterious, are the natural spectacle that captivated all cultures and civilizations in the history of our planet. There is no people who have not studied and mythologized the phenomena they observed in the night sky.
Such was the importance that they named the heavenly bodies with the names of their gods, as in the case of Greco-Roman mythology. Or they guessed their future through the phenomena they observed, as in the case of pre-Columbian societies. This desire for knowledge brought numerous technological advances, but above all it provided us with important data about the environment that surrounds us.
So, at some point in the origin of different cultures, we look up at the sky and begin to study how it works. We learned that there are phenomena that repeat and form cycles, and at that moment the spark exploded.
Through the knowledge of the recurring events observed in the sky, we learned to orient ourselves and, therefore, it was possible to undertake great journeys and move around the entire planet. This knowledge, older than civilization itself, is based on knowing the position of the constellations throughout the seasons and the rotational movements of the Earth with respect to the Sun and its own axis; Although at that time it was believed that what was moving was the Sun, they were fully aware of the cycles of light and the different positions of the Sun at different times of the year.
With this information they were able to locate themselves and not get lost during long land and sea voyages or exploring lands and seas they did not yet know. That is, the advancement of the human species lives linked to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Astronomy.
