Routes of the Camino de Santiago
In ancient times, pilgrims simply left their homes and traveled town to town until they reached Santiago de Compostela. For the same reason there are many paths and variants of the routes.
With the increase in the influx of pilgrims, routes were established, the first recorded being the famous French Way in the Calixtino Codex. But throughout the Middle Ages, paths were born from everywhere following ancient Roman roads and trade routes, for example, the Camino de la Plata.
Among these lesser-known paths, there are beautiful routes that are perfect to avoid the tourist crowds of the busiest roads, travel in contact with nature and discover wonderful places full of historical heritage. We will focus on the Camino de la Geira and los Arrieros.
Camino de la Geira y los Arrieiros
It runs from Braga in Portugal, following the old Roman road that leads to Astorga, to the border with Galicia at Portela do Homem. This Portuguese section, known as Camino de la Geira, comprises 3 stages.
The first from Braga to Santiago de Caldelas, the second to Campo de Gerês and the third enters Galicia stopping in Lobios. This first part of the road is full of historical heritage from Roman times as it runs along the old Roman road that connects Braga and Astorga.
From that stage the path follows the arrieiros route, which carried the famous Ribeiro wine to Santiago de Compostela. In these sections you can discover the precious medieval heritage of the Avia valleys, and cross the mountain paths that connect the Ribeiro with Santiago de Compostela. This section, known as Camino de los Arrieiros, comprises 7 stages in which you can enjoy a wonderful Roman and Romanesque historical heritage, nature in its purest form and some of the best wines in the world.
